The Basilica in Central Europe around the year 1000. Actual Research and the Assessment of the Place in the Ottonian Architecture

This paper is dedicated to church architecture, which arose in Central European bishoprics established within three new political projects in 10th century: Poland, Bohemia and Hungary. It is the first attempt to open the question in art-historical research. Of course, when attempting general archaeological survey, the need of proper revision of form and chronology of presented examples come to the surface. There is a need to mention some topical controversies. But the main purpose of the paper are problems of the design and contruction of the early basilicas in young christian states.
A key problem of art-historical importance is to depict the architectural forms of the basilicas against the heritage and the new tendences occurring in the church architecture of the 10th and 11th centuries. Among presented examples the cathedral in Poznan (Posen) has been well recognized building having clear Ottonian patterns in Saxony. It is not strange if we consider Unger, missionary bishop in Poland was noted as the abbot of the Benedictine abbey in Memleben.

PhD Aneta Bukowska (Jagiellonian University, Institute of History of Art) is an art historian and church archaeologist specialising in early medieval architecture and art, specially of the Carolingian and Ottonian Age. She has worked on the revision of the cathedral in Posen c. 1000 and its Ottonian provenance (English title of the book: The oldest cathedral in Posen. A problem of its form and origins in the context of the architecture of c. 1000 - dissertation 2011, publication 2013-2015). Her research interests include cathedral architecture in Ottonian Empire and contiguous areas, mainly problems of construction and design, artistic interactions, the liturgical and practical functions. She also focuses on relationship between the centres and the provinces, the impact on the christian monarchies in Central Europe. Currently she developes the idea of a full scholarly inventory and documentation of Polish architectural monuments dating from 10th and 11th century.
