Overview:
Abstract: The aim of a further development in the field of preservation of historic buildings and monuments should be the establishment of a modern strategy of conservation which is based on the principles of having lasting effects. This means it should save e.g. both economic and ecological ressources and prolong the buildings life without changing it essentially.
A way to achieve this aim could be the preventive conservation measure monitoring.
The aim of this masterthesis is the scientific proof of suitability for the preservation strategy monitoring in application to historic buildings and monuments, especially in application to historic masonry.
To this in the first part of this work a theoretical analysis of the preservation strategy monitoring will be done; apart of conservation/ restoration aspects like the description of methods of investigation and documentation, the analysis of ethical aspects concerning conservation/ restoration, the description of damages etc. outside subjects will be treated as well to illustrate the interactions of the monitoring process with other processes.
For this the relation to subjects as economy, ecology, law and quality management will be illustrated to ensure a comprehensive sight on the sensitive subject of conservation.
In the second part of this work it is tried to carry out the results of part one practically by two examples, the ehemalige Stiftskirche St. Blasii/ Fredelsloh/ Germany and the Neues Rathaus der Altstadt/ Osnabrück/ Germany.
Therefor a monitoring concept will be worked out and realized at the historic masonries, above all by using conservation/ restoration/ scientific methods of investigation and documentation.
The outcoming results should in an ideal case be a sufficient basis for a following procedure.
This means both making recommendations for conservation/ restoration measures and the probable essential adaptation of the monitoring strategy in order to carry out the monitoring in the future successfully and in a high- quality way.
For this finally an assessment of the chosen procedure will be done as well as advices to improve the chosen monitoring strategy.
