Overview:

Abstract: The dark banded marble of the Waldviertel is an important local stone for monuments in Lower Austria and in the Vienna area. Due to a limited number of recent scientific studies the conservation and restoration of this stone is often difficult. This study tries to increase the understanding of the Waldviertel marble by a complex approach to this vast topic. The main subject of research focuses on a grave monument of the Old Jewish Cemetery Gate 1 at the Zentralfriedhof (Central Cemetery) Vienna. It consists of the stone variety Häuslinger marble and shows a special type of fabric destruction. After a detailed analysis of the condition status and the implementation of consolidation tests the findings are transferred to the practical conservation and restoration of the grave.
