Overview:

Abstract: The present master’s thesis concentrates on an ensemble of parlour furniture from the time of historism. The group comes from Vienna and shows stylistic elements of the renaissance and the Louis XVI. The typical furniture shapes of the late 19th century are combined with marquetry of brass, copper and zinc as well as mother of pearl. The main characteristics of the furniture’s design are the linear inlays of mother of pearl fragments. This is constituted as a rather exceptional composition, which attracted little to none interest in literature so far. The art historical and technological investigation into a number of objects for comparison, which could be gathered through this paper, supports the findings obtained and includes them in the historical context.
