Overview:

Abstract: The bachelor thesis deals with a polychrome painted dulcimer, a zither type trapeze shaped string instrument with two paintings on its lid.
The instrument was part of the collection of the former Hermann-Moeck-Museum in Celle (Lower Saxony, Germany). Its polychrome painting dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century. It is possible to assign the painting on the outer lid to an engraving after a painting of Antoine Watteau.

The main focus lies on the technological examination and determining the instrument’s condition as well as establishing a concept for the conservation of the instrument, focusing on the paintings and on the polychromatic painting. The thesis also addresses the art and cultural history, the object’s history and analyses the environmental conditions in the musical instruments collection.
Due to the amount of alterations the dulcimer has undergone makes the examination and the dating of the instrument difficult.
