Overview:

Abstract: Historic coin-operated machines from the ending of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century mark the beginnings of the Europian commercial use of this type of machines. They are multi-faceted and have not been tackled by conservation experts so far. That is why German game of skill machines from 1900 to 1953 from the Gauselmann Collection are dealt with here. These ancestors of modern commercial gaming machines no longer exist today. So the special aspect of gambling has to be considered. The merely macroscopic analysis shows the zeitgeist and the technological developments of the first half of the 20th century. By diligent analysis of the existing conservation methods of this private collection, basic concepts of conservation and presentation can be developed.
