The rocking horse „Rustan“
Abstract: Material varieties, use and repair: The conservation and restoration of the rocking horse „Rustan“ from the Museum of Toys in Salzburg (Date 1860; 110 x 45 x 83 cm) The presented paper deals with the conservation of the rocking horse „Rustan“ from the Museum of Toys in Salzburg. The object originates from the region around Vienna and was made in 1860 by unknown manufacturer. Materials analyses of the large varieties of used materials (wood, textile, leather, paper, metal, glass, horse hair) are undertaken and treatment options are studied and applied. Close examination and the results of the analyses confirmed the details of how the rocking horse is constructed and lead to the identification of the paint layers. Furthermore two different paint layers were discovered, meaning that the initial original paint layer was overpainted at a later time. A treatment methodology was developed and applied, such as sewing and mending of tears, infilling of losses in the canvas, removal of surface dirt, preservation of metal parts as well as the consolidation of the paint layers, support fabric (cotton and newspaper) and leather applications. Finally, a partial retouching was done.
