Abstract: | This diploma thesis deals with nine objects by Viennese artist Birgit Jürgenssen, made from natural rubber and dated 1979/80. The objectives were to carry out an indepth examination of the materials and working process of the artist and to find out more about the artistic intent and the status of the hitherto unexhibited objects within the oeuvre of the artist. The objects were examined visually and different types of analyses were carried out. Additionally, mock-ups with natural rubber were made to help gain an understanding of the working process. Furthermore, the artist’s notebooks were surveyed and several people from her artistic environ-ment were interviewed. This research provided a basis for the elaboration of preservation strategies, conservation and restoration measures and suggestions for potential future presentation. An exemplary treatment on one of the objects was carried out, stabilizing loose areas along the edges and on two objects the surface dust was reduced. Finally, appropriate packing for all objects was devised. |
