Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The theses deals with the conservation and restoration of a painted lampshade made of parchment, which is part of the interior furnishings of “Villa Ast” (Haus Heimdall) at the Wörthersee (Carinthia, Austria) and dates from the beginning of the 20th century. The study focusses on three main areas: First, the art historical context of the object will be discussed; it’s starting point being the architect Josef Hoffmann, who designed the interior of the Villa Ast.
Furthermore, the thesis contains a literature review about material aspects of parchment and its degradation processes with a focus on possible methods of treatment of degraded parchment. Finally, the conservation concept is discussed and the conservation measures are described, the treatment of heat-damaged parchment being a particular challenge. Other focal points are the approach to later repairs of the lampshade and the remounting of the parchments.
