Abstract: | This thesis focuses on the restauration and conservation of Marcel Breuers cantilever-chair B 35. The tubular steel chair with its inventory number OV 187 is part of the collection of the Museum of Applied Art in Cologne (MAKK). Tubular steel chairs with a covering of iron yarn often show similar types of damage. The tubular steel undergoes severe processes of corrosion. The iron oxides migrate into the fabric where they appear as brownish spots. Furthermore they catalyse degradation reactions of the cellulose. The iron yarn fabric forms the thematic emphasis of the thesis. Art historical analysis of ist production and ist use are followed by scientific examinations of the fabric and the tubular steel. The collected information form the basis for several tests of different dry and wet cleaning methods, which were developed to conserve the chair B 35. |
