Overview:

Abstract: The main focus of the diploma thesis is the stone crest of the former house “Zu den güldenen
Engeln” (Engl. Golden Angels Inn). The object is dated to 1589, but the artist or executing workshop
is unknown. Due to the situation of non‐existing references, it is only possible to provide limited
information regarding the object itself, its history and later locations. Research has also not given any
information regarding the architecture and construction of the former house “Zu den güldenen
Engeln”, which was demolished in 1893.
The stone crest consists of two compatible pieces of fragments. Initially, a polychrome decoration of
the crest could not have been proved.
The aim of this project involves the conservation and restoration of the object, which will
subsequently be displayed in a museum. At the beginning of this project the stone crest was
examined regarding its condition to state the completeness and the extent of deterioration of the
object. The results will be explained and presented as part of the thesis.
Based on the examination a treatment conception was generated. As a result of this, the
conservation and restoration treatment was carried out on the object.
The extent of cleaning and plastic repair is discussed within the treatment conception. These
observations also include the considered future use: the display of the stone crest. The main
emphasis of the diploma thesis is the discussion of the topic regarding the extent of plastic repair on
the object. Different potential possibilities of plastic repair will be discussed, formulated and
demonstrated along with drawings and photographs. In this context, possibilities and necessities of
plastic retouching and reconstruction will also be part of the discussion and evaluation.
The discussion of possible options, considering the visual effect of the different extents of plastic
repair will help to demonstrate the effect on the general view of the stone crest. This will enable to
make a decision on the extent of plastic repair required and as a result of this, the most favourite
option will be presented.
