Abstract: | This thesis explores the conservation and restoration of a bookcase from the furniture-series "Soziale Wohnkultur" (SW, social living culture), that was conceptualized by architects for the efficient furnishing of small apartments in Vienna starting in the mid-1950s. While combining published sources about the SW-project with material and technological analysis, characteristic design features could be identified and a chronological placement developed. The main research focus of this thesis is water damage to the cellulose nitrate coating of the bookcase and the advancement of treatment option for this particular problem. Methods to reduce the visual impact of the damaged area are developed while simultaneously stabilizing the coating. Therefore the low-molecular synthetic resin Regalrez® 1126 is applied to regain the transparency of the coating. In order to restore the surface protection the polymeric synthetic resin Degalan® P28 is applied while gels from Gellan Gum are used to reduce the discoloration on the veneer. |
