Abstract: | The present work deals with the examination of two painted neo-Gothic textiles (tapestry imitations) with mould from the church of St. Mariä Himmelfahrt in Kleve. In addition to the technological examination of the objects, including the registration of the state of preservation and various material analyzes, a microbial infestation with a series of experiments on the growth behavior is performed. To clarify the cause of the mould problem, the environmental conditions of the objects in the church are analyzed. Measurements on the climatic conditions, the air movement, the activity of the infestation, and the spore concentration of the indoor air are made. Moreover, preventive measures, such as the increasing of the distance between object and wall and the installation of an inner wall insulation, are being tested. Subsequently, based on the knowledge gained, a treatment concept focusing on the mould problem is developed and a recommendation for the future presentation of the two tapestry imitations is provided. |
