Abstract: | The Lintel of the Heroon of Trysa belongs to the Kunsthistorisches Museum (KHM) in Vienna since 1883. Due to massive transport damage, restoration was carried out by the sculptor and conservator Wilhelm Sturm junior. The fragmented lintel was assembled using Sorel cement mortar, brass pins and a massive iron frame. Missing parts were recontructed also in Sorel cement mortar. After being exposed outdoors for 100 years, consequential damage is apparent mainly due to weathering of the Sorel cement mortar as well as the rusting of the iron frame. Besides the historical analysis with a particular emphasis on the previous conservation work, the actual practical work includes the removal of the mortar as well as the iron frame. The stone fragments were again put together and are now ready for exhibition. |
