Abstract: | The topic of this thesis is a folding fan from the collection of the “Städtische Museen Jena". The fan consists of a wooden mount and two separate leafs: a printed leaf made of paper and a richly embellished leaf out of silk with metal sequins, golden threads and silk embroidery. The study debates the fans uniqueness and its value as a record of cultural history through literature research and describes its production in accordance with the applied working techniques and scientific analyses. It defines an appropriate aim of conservation based on the various materials and the individual pattern of damage, which is followed by the development of a conservation concept and its practical implementation. Another subject is the production of an adequate box for exhibition and storage as well as the development of a concept regarding preventive conservation. |
