Abstract: | The Blechschmidt Collection in the Zentrum Anatomie of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen comprises about 60 replicas of the human embryo. Erich Blechschmidt, head of the institute, initiated the production in the middle of the 20th century. The replicas are displayed in showcases and demonstrate the stages of the development of the human embryo. The material mainly used is polyester resin. This work focuses on scientific investigations on manufacturing technology and materials of the replicas as well as on damages and their reasons. The impact of the showcases is also discussed in detail. The results merge into an initial conservational approach to the collection that also includes advise on handling of the objects and further research questions. |
