Abstract: | Several blue painted ceramics from the Egyptian collection in Berlin have injured and unstable surfaces. One of them was restored during this dissertation. A consolidation of the surface was necessary to protect the paint from further decay. The consolidant had to stabilize the mat painting material without effecting colour changes, surface darkening and gloss. From a series of tests, carried out with different consolidants, polyvinylbutyrale ( Mowital ) was found out to be suitable to conservate unstable painted surfaces on egyptian pottery from the Amarna-period. Investigations from the seventies and eighties deal with the manufacture of the colours. It is not clear if they were applied to the vessels body before or after firing. The different theses were verified during the investigation and restauration of the painted vessel. |
