Nadine Piechatschek: Passementerie buttons of the 17th century. Technology, conservation and restoration back

Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: Twenty-three doublets and bodices, the most part dating from the 17th century and several from the 18th century, were entrusted to the Abegg-Stiftung in Riggisberg by the Hessisches Landesmuseum in Darmstadt for the purposes of documentation and conservation.
This thesis concerns the passementerie buttons on the costumes, examining their techniques and systematically documenting them in catalogue form.
The conservation methods for passementerie buttons known to date are presented and their pros and cons evaluated. This allows for the development and testing of the most suitable methods of conservation in each case of deterioration. The examination results of these buttons are, moreover, presented in the overall context of the costumes themselves. In this light, the documentation relating to the buttons is intended to supplement to the costume analysis.
