Abstract: | From the mid 1950s onwards Gottfried Kappen a Ruhr Basin located artist created sculptures made of polyester resin especially for outdoor purposes. Up to his death in 1981 he created numerous sculptures in his atelier in Kirchhellen, which are now in public, private and ecclesiatical hands. Twenty-one of the sculptures located near Kappen’s domain were examined in this work, focussing on the artist, his technique and his position in the context of cultural history. A conservation concept was developed based on an inventory and systematical condition survey of the in situ sculptures, general conservation and restoration measures were considered and further examinations on the sample object Kreuz Große-Wilde as well as testing of adhesives for polyester were undertaken. |
