Abstract: | The „Humerus Fracture“ of the sculpture „Woman with Purse“ (1974) by Duane Hanson, from the collection of the Museum Ludwig in Köln had lost an arm and therefore needed to be restored. A restoration concept for the sculpture made from unsaturated polyester (UP) was developed. In line with restoration procedure the previously detatched arm was re-attached with a form fitting bond to the body of the sculpture. The bond itself was established by calculating the anticipated force imposed on the joint, selecting the adhesive based on tensile strength and installing a „Sheet Anchor“. In practice, due to the rigidity of the sculpture’s material, a complex rig was developed to hold the damaged piece in exactly the right place prior to fixing. |
